Robots May Allow Surgery in Space

Small robots designed by University of Nebraska researchers may allow doctors on Earth to help perform. surgery on patients in space.

The tiny, wheeled robots, (51)are about 3 inches tall and as wide as a lipstick case, can be slipped into small incisions(切口)and computer-controlled by surgeons in different locations. Some robots are equipped(52)cameras and lights and can send images back to surgeons and others have surgical tools attached that can be(53)remotely.

“We think this is going to (54)open surgery, ”Dr Dmitry Oleynikov said at a news conference. Oleynikov is a (55)in computer-assisted surgery at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

Officials hope that NASA will teach(56)to use the robots soon enough so that surgeries could one day be performed in space.

On earth, the surgeons could control the robots themselves(57)other locations. For example, the robots could enable surgeons in other places to (58)on injured soldiers on the front line. Researchers plan tp seek federal regulatory(59)early nest year. Tests on animals have been successful, and tests on humans in England will begin very soon.

The camera-carrying robots can provide(60)of affected areas and the ones with surgical tools will be able to maneuver(操控)inside the body in ways surgeons' hands can't. The views from the camera-carrying robots are (61)than the naked eye, because they(62)back color images that are magnified(放大). Because several robots can be inserted through one incision, they could reduce the amount and (63)of cuts needed for surgery, which would decrease recovery time. This is particularly(64)to those patients who have been debilitated(使虚弱)by long illness.

Eventually, Oleynikov said, the tiny robots may enable surgeons to work without ever(65)their hands in patients' bodies. “That's the goal, ”Oleynikov said. “It's getting easier and easier. We can do even more with these devices. ”

As you are students of English, it's very possible that you'll be interested in England. T
hat's where the language was first spoken. But England is often called by other names. This often confuses people and I wonder if you know what these names mean. So, now I would like to tell you about this matter of names. I believe that you have heard people use the names England, Britain of Great Britain. Let's see what each of these names means.

If you look at a map of Europe, you'll see a group of islands--one larger island off the northwest coats, one smaller and many tiny ones. These make up what is called the British Isles (不列填群岛). The largest island of the British Isles in Britain. It is also called Great Britain. The smaller island is Ireland (爱尔兰)。

Britain is divided into three parts: Scotland, Wales and England. But sometimes the word " England" is used instead of "Britain". Why so?

In anceient times, what is Britain now used to be three different countries. People in these different counntries spoke different languages. Over many years the three countries became one. England in the largest and richest of the three and it has the most people. So the English people take it for granted that their own name stands for the whole island.

There's another thing that confuses people; sometimes you may hear people say "the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. "That is the official name of the country. Northern Irelnd is only one sixth of the island of Ireland. The rest of the island is an independent state, called the Republic of Ireland. So we have the names of "England", "Britain"," Great Britain", and "the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland". Now do you know what each of them means?

English was first spoken in ______.

A.Britain

B.England

C.Great Britain

D.Ireland

Does a bee know what is going on in its mind when it navigates its way to distant food sou
rces and back to the hive (蜂房), using polarized sunlight and the tiny magnet it carries as a navigational aid? Or is the bee just a machine, unable to do its mathematics and dance its language in any other way? To use Donald GrifTm's term, does a bee have awareness, or to use a phrase I like better, can a bee think and imagine?

There is an experiment for this, or at least an observation, make long ago by Karl Von Frisch and more recently confirmed by James Gould at Princeton, Biologists who wish to study such things as bee navigation, language, and behavior. in general have to train their bees to fly from the hive to one or another special place. To do this, they begin by placing a source of sugar very close to the hive so that the bees (considered by their trainers to be very dumb beasts) can learn what the game is about. Then, at regular intervals, the dish or whatever is moved progressively father and farther from the hive in increments (增长) of about 25 percent at each move. Eventually, the target is being moved 100 feet or more at a jump, very far from the hive. Sooner or later, while this process is going on, the biologists shifting the dish of sugar will find the bees are out there waiting for them, precisely where the next position had been planned. This is an uncomfortable observation to make.

With what subject is the passage mainly concerned?

A.The bee, a social animal.

B.Navigational techniques of bees.

C.Testing the awareness of bees.

D.The bee hive, nature's candy shop.

Futurists love computers. After all, 40 years ago electronic digital computers didn't exis
t; today microchips (微型集成电路片) as tiny as a baby's fingernail are making all sorts of tasks faster and easier. Surely the future hold still more miracles.

Some of the computer experiments now going inspire imagination of the future. For example, scientists are working in devices that can electronically perform. some sight and hearing functions, which could make easier for the blind and deaf. They are also working on artificial arms and legs that respond to the electric impulses (脉冲) produced by the human brain. Scientists hope that someday a person who has lost an arm could still have near-normal brain control over an artificial arm.

Video games, computerized effects in movies, and real-life training machines now being used by the U. S. Army are causing some people to predict new educational uses for computers. Computers could someday be used to imitate travel to other planets, to explore the ocean floor or to look inside an atom.

Experiment with electronic banking and shopping inspire predictions that these activities will soon be done from home computer terminals (终端) . Cars, too, might be equipped with computers to help drivers find their way around or to communicate with home and office computers.

Many people, including handicapped (残废的) workers with limited ability to move around, already are working at home using computer terminals. Each terminal is connected to a system at a company's main office. Some futurists say the day may come when few people will have to leave home to go to work—they'll just turn on a terminal.

Which of the following would be the most appropriate title for the passage?

A.Futurists and Computers

B.A Look at Future Uses of Computers

C.Computer Experiments

D.Scientists and Computers

D

This is not a diet (减肥食谱) or a hard ~exercise program. Nobody can stick to those for long. Instead, it's a simple way to make weight loss a natural part of the life you already live. And guess what? It's fun! You don't have to give up the foods you love or do regular exercises. It's about balancing calories(平衡卡路里) in tiny ways that add up to big benefits (好处). You just use some tricks the "naturally thin" people do. Pick the ones you like, stick with them, and you'll lose weight and be strong!

Talk it UP Every time you pick Up the phone, stand up and walk around. Heavy people sit on average two and h half hours more every day than thin people, according to astudy.

Get face time We use e-mailso much that we've forgotten what our colleagues look like.

Pick a colleague or two who sit farthest from you: and deliver 10 of those daily messages in person. And go out of your way: go to a bathroom ora copy machine on another floor and take the stairs, of course.

Think about your drink Consider beer or wine instead of a frozen drink: A glass of regular beer has 140 calories and a serving of wine has 126 calories, while a strawberry daiquiri has about 300 and a margarita 340.

Reduce a total of 100 calories each day and you'll be able to lose about 10 pounds in a year. This is really not difficult to do.

47. What is mainly talked about in the passage?

A. How to do exercises daily.

B. How to lose weight easily.

C. How to work comfortably.

D: How to eat and drink regularly.
