Specialists in marketing have studied how to make people buy more food in a supermarket. T
hey do all kinds of things that you do not even notice. For example, the simple, ordinary food that everybody must buy, like bread, milk, flour, and vegetable oil, is spread all over the store. You have to walk by all the more interesting-and more expensive-things in order to find what you need. The more expensive food is in packages with bright colored pictures. This food is placed at eye level so you see it and want to buy it. The things that you have to buy anyway are usually located on a higher or lower shelf. However, candy and other things that children like are on lower shelves. One study showed that when a supermarket moved four products from floor to eye level, it sold 78 percent more.

Another study showed that for every minute a person is in a supermarket after the first half hour, she or he spends $50. If someone stays forty minutes, the supermarket has an additional $5.00. So the store has a comfortable temperature in summer and winter, and it plays soft music. It is a pleasant place for people to stay and spend more money.

Some stores have red or pink lights over the meat so the meat looks redder. They put light green paper around lettuce (生菜) and put apples in red plastic bags.

So be careful in the supermarket. You may go home with a bag of food you were not planning to buy. The supermarket, not you, decided you should buy it.

Marketing specialists study______.

A.plants suitable for human needs

B.how to build shelves

C.method of selling more products

D.how to own supermarkets

听力原文:M: You should have seen the line at the housing office. It took me an hour to mak
e my dormitory deposit for next year. Have you made yours yet?

W: No, I'm not sure I'm going to.

M: There's not much time left. The deadline's May 1. That is just two weeks from now. Are you short of cash.

W: No, I'm Okay.

M: You'd better hurry up if you want a dorm room next September. There aren't enough rooms for every one, and first-year students have priority.

W: Well, I've been thinking about living off campus.

M: Have you any idea how much that would cost? There is the rent, utilities, and you'd probably need a car.

W: I know it would be more expensive. I think I can handle it though. The dorm is just so noisy that I can't get anything done. Maybe my grades would be better if I had some peace and quiet in a place of my own.

M: You should study in the library the way I do. Think of the money you'd save.

W: I've got to think it over some more. There's still two weeks left in April.

(23)

A.When to move.

B.Where to live the following year.

C.How much time to spend at home.

D.Whose house to visit.

Most cities and/or states in the U. S. collect a sales tax on almost everything you buy. Y
ou must ask when you move into a new community how much the local sales tax is, and what items are and are not taxable. Both taxable items and the amount of tax vary considerably from place, from one of two percent in some places up to eight or ten in others. The New York City sales tax, for examples, is currently 8% , so if you buy a pair of $40 shoes you will actually have to pay $43.20. This makes paying and getting correct change much more difficult (not to mention making .everything more expensive). We say in America that only two things in life are unavoidable: one is death and the other taxes.

Another thing that makes money exchanges more complicated is tipping. The Chinese people have happily put an end to tipping, but Westerners are still plagued with this indignity. Waiters and waitresses, cab drivers, hotel bellboys, barbers and hairdressers and all sorts of other people must be tipped. Their employers give them low wages because it is expected that you, the customer, will make up the difference. If you don' t, the service person can' t earn a living. Tipping also varies from place to place, generally in the area of 15% of your bill (before taxes), but again you should ask local residents whom to tip and how much.

There is another kind of tipping as well. You are generally expected to give something (either cash or a bottle of whisky) to the mailman and to your building "super" at Christmas time. You should discuss this also with neighbors and colleagues.

The main idea of this passage is ______.

A.shopping and tipping

B.sales and shopping

C.sales taxes and tipping

D.sales taxes and people

Most of us trade money for entertainment. Movies, concerts and shows are enjoyable but exp
ensive. (78) If you think that you can't have a good time without spending a lot of money, read on. A little resourcefulness and a few minutes of newspaper- scanning should give you some pleasant surprises.

People may be the most interesting show in a large city. Stroll through busy streets and see what everybody else is doing. (79) You will probably see people from all over the world; you will certainly see people of every age, size, and shape, and you' II get a free fashion show, too. Window - shopping is also a safe sport -- if the stores are closed.

Check the listings in your neighborhood paper. Local colleges or schools often welcome the public to hear an interesting speaker or a good debate. The film or concert series at the local public library probably won't cost you a penny. Be sure to check commercial advertisements too. A flea market can provide hours of pleasant browsing. Perhaps you can find a free cooking or crafts demonstration in a department store.

Plan ahead for some activities. It is always more pleasant not to have people in front of you in a museum or at a zoo. You may save some money, too, since these places often set aside one or two free admission days at slow times during the week. Pretend that you are a tourist from time to time, and get to know your city all over again including the indispensable sights that people travel miles to see. If you feel like taking an interesting walk, find a free walking tour, or plan one yourself. You will see your city in a new perspective once you know more about its history or its architectural treasures. With imagination and a spirit of adventure you can quite easily find good entertainment at no cost at all.

B.The film shown at the local public library is often free of charge.

C.Local colleges often hold meetings to debate the issues people are interested in.

Nowadays, especially in China, everything seems to favor social intercourse (社交), such as gatherings of friends, KTV, group travel, dining tighter, playing cards and Mahjong, plus the Chinese-style. “street-crossing group.” Back home, discussions can still be boisterously carried on within the “circle of friends” of WeChat.

However, these scenes cannot always ease a sense of loneliness. Zhu Ziqing, a well-known professor of Tsinghua University, signed with emotion: “My loneliness increases as scene becomes much busier.” One popular song today is also called “A lonely man in crowds.” Actually, engaging in social intercourse requires ability, while being alone involves the whole character. These days, it is not easy to calm down totally and return to one’s true self. Willpower, intellect and discipline are required. Einstein said: “It is not your working time but your spare time that determines the possibility of whether you will be successful or not.” The “spare time” he referred to could be taken as “spending time by yourself.”

Lonely life could be either dull, boring and tasteless or abundant, interesting and colorful, depending on one’s quality, ambition and inspiration.

Just as the body constantly requires energy, the mind and soul also demand never stopping inputs. However, information, processed and integrated (融入) into knowledge, thoughts and feelings, instead of bustle (忙碌) seems to be the right condition. Successful careers in all walks of life worldwide have proved that “the soul grows in peace and talent is nurtured in loneliness”. In a sense, it may be reasonable to say that “Happiness tends to be shallow while loneliness involves depth”.

Man, in fact, needs loneliness more than happy time, and only abundant loneliness can produce quality happiness.

Which of the following can replace the underlined the word “boisterously” in paragraph 1

A.surprisingly

B.sadly

C.busily

D.peacefully

What can we infer from the second paragraphA.Being alone marks people depressed.

B.Social intercourse improves our happiness.

C.One may feel lonely even when surrounded by people.

D.We should attend social intercourse to decrease our loneliness.

What can we know from Einstein’s wordsA.You should be successful if you spend all your time by yourself.

B.You should exercise more if you want to keep your minds healthy.

C.You will not become successful if you join in more social intercourse.

D.You will be more successful if you can make your lonely time meaningful.

Which may be the best title for this passageA.Live on Your Own

B.Happiness and Loneliness

C.The Secret of Success

D.Practice Your Social Ability
