A farmer had once made a purchase of a fine fat sheep, hoping to offer it up to the B
uddha. While he was leading it home, four thieves saw him and made up their minds to steal the sheep. They knew him to be an honest person and one who thought of no more harm in others than he had in himself. They dared not take the sheep away from him by force, for they were too near the city. Therefore, they thought hard and got an idea: they first parted company and then came to the man as if they had come from several distinct parts.

The first thief came up to the farm and said, “My good old man, why are you leading this dog?”

At this moment the second thief, coming from another direction, cried to him, “Poor old man, where have you stolen this dog?”And immediately after these words, the third thief came up and asked the farmer,“Where are you going with this handsome greyhound?”

The poor farmer began to doubt whether the sheep was a sheep or not. But the fourth robber put him quite beside himself by coming near him and asking what the dog cost him.

The farmer began to think and got the conclusion that the four men, who came from different directions, could not all be wrong. He believed that the sheep he was leading was a dog. You might think that the topic of “taking the bus” is a weird one to choose for this b
log. And you might be right but taking the bus in Latin America is always a fascinating experience. In the UK, bus journeys are just boring and, more often than not, a necessity. Public transport is often convenient when you live or work in the city centre, as you can avoid traffic jams by whizzing down the bus lanes, and do not have to pay to park the car. At the end of the day, though, taking the bus is just a necessary and tedious part of life: you board the bus, pay the driver and sit down (or find a place to stand). Very boring. In Latin America, however, bus trips can be very lively. For a start, intercity buses put on films so that you have entertainment for at least some of the journey. Naturally local transport does not show films but drivers usually switch on the radio and that can be a great way to hear new songs and new styles of music. (Disappointingly there is not much salsa music back home). Even better than films or music are the sights and sounds on the buses. Local buses always go to parts of town that you would not otherwise visit. There you see shops that you never knew existed. Visitors travelling on buses can see new aspects of a culture from the window seat of the bus. Passengers’ “luggage” is also interesting. It is not uncommon for a cheerful dog’s head to be poking out of somebody’s bag and for someone else to carry a chicken under their arm. Once on a bus in Peru, a farmer tied what looked like a dead sheep to the roof. I was quite shocked and even more so when the farmer got off the bus and, on taking the sheep off the roof, it trotted off very happily. On top of the same bus, another passenger had put his chainsaw. The sheep and power tool combination had me very nervous. There are really many things for visitors to do in Latin America. Taking the bus doesn’t sound like fun but it is much more exciting and unpredictable than any UK bus journey.

(1)In the UK, taking the bus is fascinating.

(2)In Latin America, when taking the bus, you can listen to music and see new aspects of a culture.

(3)Public transport in the UK is convenient because a variety of means of public transportation are available.

(4)As for bus trips in Latin America, passengers’ luggage can be interesting.

(5)Bus journeys are unpredictable in Latin America.

I was 14 when Mr. Ingram knocked on our farmhouse door in Sacred Hear, Okla. The old farme
r lived about a mile down the road and needed help cutting grass. It was the first time I was actually paid for work -- about 12 cents an hour, not bad when you consider it was 1939 ,a time when there was little business activity.

Mr. Ingram liked the job I did and ended up hiring me to dig potatoes. I even helped when a baby cow was being born.

One day he found an old truck that was stuck in the soft, sandy soil of the melon (瓜) field. It was full of melons that someone had tried to steal before their truck got stuck.

Mr. Ingram explained that the truck's owner would be returning soon, and he wanted me to watch and learn. It wasn't long before a man from a nearby village, who had a terrible reputation (名声) for fighting and stealing, showed up with his two full-grown sons. They looked very angry.

Calmly Mr. Ingram said, "Well, I see you want to buy some watermelons."

There was a long silence before the man answered," Yeah, I guess so. What are you getting for them?"

"Twenty-five cents each."

"Well, I guess that would be fair enough if you help me get my truck out of here."

It turned out to be our biggest sale of the summer, and an unpleasant, perhaps unfortunate, incident had been prevented. After they left, Mr. Ingram smiled and said to me," Son, if you don't for give (原谅) your enemies, you're going to run out of friends. "

Mr. Ingram died a few years later, but I have never forgotten him or what he taught me on my first job.

Which of the following best explains "ended up" as is used in the passage?

A.enjoyed

B.finished

C.got into
