Thank You, Volunteers!

By the end of each year, we'd try to show our appreciation to those volunteers who have helped to make life more beautiful. Therefore, it’s in December that we tend to think of a way in which we could show our thanks to them. Here are some posts online to thank those who have volunteered to offer all kinds of help.

Potlucks for Staff and Volunteers

(1) I like to hold potlucks at the office and invite volunteers to make them feel like part of the team. The volunteers are asked to bring with them a big appetite. (Posted on 29 December, 2018 by Nazia Anderson)

Giving Cards to Volunteers

This year I sent out thank-you cards to the volunteers. It’s a great way to show our thanks toward the end of the year, and (2) this makes our volunteers know we’re grateful to them for what they’ve done in the busy year. (Posted on 1 December, 2018 by Traci Lato)

Hats Off to Volunteers

Our library volunteers received various baskets of goodies, boxes of chocolates, flowers and plants, etc. The staff wore hats all week and tipped them toward the volunteers as we saw them. The volunteers here seemed to appreciate the silent effort to recognize them. (Posted on 20 December, 2018 by Aimee Hepler)

Afternoon at the Movies

During National Volunteer Week we recognized our volunteers by taking them to the movies. (3) We had our recognition awards program before the movie started, followed by a 15-minute coffee break. The volunteers had a bag of popcorn and a drink waiting for them. They also had their choice of 2 movies. It was very well received and we will do it again next year. (Posted on 23 December, 2018 by Linda Bacon)

Pat on the Back

Here’s a very inexpensive idea that should work for any type of organization. I simply draw around my hand on a piece of paper, print “Here’s a pat on the back for You, Mr. / Ms. for all the hard work and effort you’ve made here”, then copy it onto colored paper. The teens at our community help me cut them out. (Posted on 20 December, 2018 by Wu Qing)

We talk every day. When we have good news, we like to share it with our good friends and w
hen something terrible happens, we make it known to others soon. But can you imagine that a tree can talk and share news too? Of course, no tree moves lips and says words just as people do. Strange as it may sound, though, some trees do manage to communicate with each other.

Willow(柳树) trees are the best-known of these trees. When insects begin nibbling(叮咬) a willow tree, the tree sends out a special smell at once. This smell tells the other willows that harmful insects are coming near. All of them quickly make a chemical(化学物质) in their leaves. This chemical is bad to the insects. The insects do not like it and they fly away soon. In this way, the willow trees protect themselves from the insects.

The next time when you take a walk in the woods, maybe the trees are “talking” to each other quietly. And when someone says that trees cannot “talk”, please tell them that even trees give messages to each other, too.

Should you {shoot; mail; give} off an email? Tap out a text? Post a private message on Facebook? Write on their Facebook wall? Skype, poke, ping or conjure them up on a digital tin can phone?

Young people who drink or use drugs are mainly influenced by both their parents and their
pressure.

Other reasons they take that first drink are to be rebellious (反抗的), for curiosity or "kicks" (刺激) or to escape an unpleasant environment. And young people drink and use drugs because alcohol (酒精) and drugs are at hand.

After first experimental use, young people continue to drink or use drugs because they believe these substances can relieve boredom, increase energy, decrease anxiety, solve problems, or help them socially. They may simply like the "high" they get in the early and middle stages of substance use. After continued use, they will drink or use drugs because they become physically and psychologically (心理地) addicted (上瘾的).

Now that we have admitted that we have to solve this problem. We must decide how to deal with this challenge. Winning this will take a great effort involving local, state, and national government. It will require the effort of schools, but it cannot be done by schools alone. It will take family and com munity involvement. Already a great amount of time, energy and expert knowledge has been directed toward dealing with it but the problem continues.

Which of the following is not mentioned as the reason of drinking and using drugs in the passage?

A.the selling of alcohol and drugs

B.pressure from their parents and relatives

C.curiosity

D.their eagerness to experience what is not permissible to them

It is a great truth because once we truly understand and accept it. Then life is no lo
nger difficult. Most people do not fully see this truth. Instead they complain about their problems and difficulties as if life should be easy. It seems to them that difficulties represent (代表) a special kind of suffering especially forced upon them or else upon their families, their class, or even their nation.

What makes life difficult is the process of facing and solving problems and it is a painful one. Problems, depending on their nature, cause us sadness or, loneliness or regret or anger of fear. These are uncomfortable feelings, often as painful as any kind of physical pain. And since life causes an endless series of problems, life is always difficult and is full of pain as well as joy.Yet, it is in this whole process of solving problems that life has its meaning. Problems are the serious test that tells us success from failure. When we desire to encourage the growth of human spirit, we encourage the human ability to solve problems, just as in school we set problems for our children to solve. It is through the pain of meeting and working out problems that we learn. As Benjamin Franklin said, "Those things that hurt, instruct." We are living in one of those periods in human history which are marked by revolutionary c
hanges in all of man's ideas and values. It is a time when every one of us must look within himself to find what ideas, what beliefs, and what ideals each of us will live by. And unless we find these ideals, and unless we stand by them firmly, we have no power to overcome the crisis in which we in our world find ourselves.

I believe in people, in sheer, unadulterated humanity. I believe in listening to what people have to say, in helping them to achieve the things which they want and the things which they need. Naturally, there are people who behave like beasts, who kill, who cheat, who lie and who destroy. But without a belief in man and a faith in his possibilities for the future, there can be no hope for the future, but only bitterness that the past has gone. I believe we must, each of us, make a philosophy by which we can live. There are people who make a philosophy out of believing in nothing. They say there is no truth, that goodness is simply cleverness in disguising your own selfishness. They say that life is simply the short gap in between an unpleasant birth and an inevitable death. There are others who say that man is born into evil and sinfulness and that life is a process of purification through suffering and that death is the reward for having suffered.

I believe these philosophies are false. The most important thing in life is the way it is lived, and there is no such thing as an abstract happiness, an abstract goodness or morality, or an abstract anything, except in terms of the person who believes and who acts. There is only the single human being who lives and who, through every moment of his own personal living experience, is being happy or unhappy, noble or base, wise or unwise, or simply existing.

The question is: How can these individual moments of human experience be filled with the richness of a philosophy which can sustain the individual in his own life? Unless we give part of ourselves away, unless we can live with other people and understand them and help them, we are missing the most essential part of our own human lives.

There are as many roads to the attainment of wisdom and goodness as there are people who undertake to walk them. There are as many solid truths on which we can stand as there are people who can search them out and who will stand on them. There are as many ideas and ideals as there are men of good will who will hold them in their minds and act them in their lives.

A. listening to people's opinions

B. revolutionary changes

C. being happy or unhappy

D. the way it is lived

E. we give part of ourselves away

F. many roads to the attainment of wisdom

G. as a short gap between birth and death
