When I lived in Spain, some Spanish friends of mine decided to visit England by car. B

efore they left, they asked me for advice about how to find accommodation (住所). I suggested that they should stay at ‘bed and breakfast’ houses, because this kind of accommodation gives a foreign visitor a good chance to speak English with the family. In English, it means that workmen are repairing the road, and that you must take a different road. When my friends saw the word ‘DIVERSION’ on a road sign, they thought they were going to have fun. Instead, the road ended in a large hold.

English people have problems too when they learn foreign languages. Once in Paris. when someone offered me some more coffee, I said ‘Thank you’ in French. I meant that I would like some more, However , to my surprise the coffee pot was taken away! Later I found out that ‘Thank you’ in French means ‘No, thank you.’

Why is it that some people seem to learn several languages without any effort while fo

For example if you are a Reflective Learner you may not do so well in a purely conversational class and as an Auditory Learner you probably don't want to do so much reading. A particular area in which assumptions and values differ between cultures is that of friendship. Friendships among Americans tend to be shorter and less intense than these among people from many other cultures. At least many observers from abroad have this impression.Because Americans are taught to be self-reliant，because they live in a very mobile society，and for many other reasons as well，they tend to avoid deep involvement with other people. Furthermore，Americans tend to“compartmentalize”their friendships，having their“friends at work”，“friends at school”，a“tennis friend”，and so on. People normally have in their minds stereotypes about people who are different from themselves. Stereotypes are based on limited and incomplete experience and information，but they shape people’s thoughts and expectations. The first is the idea，held by some foreign males，that American females are invariably willing，if not anxious to have sex. The second common stereotype，held by some American females，is that male foreign students have no interest in American females other than having with them. The existence of these and other stereotypes can give rise to considerable misunderstanding and can block the development of a mutually satisfactory relationship between particular individuals. Stereotypes seem unavoidable given the way the human mind seeks to categorize and classify information，so it is not realistic to suppose people can“forget their stereotypes”. But they can be aware of their stereotypes，and be ready to find exceptions to them.

Cultural differences in business entertaining include issues such as whom one entertains a

nd where and how one entertains. In countries in which status is important, it is not advisable to invite people of different statuses to the same dinner party. Americans will often invite people to their homes. Because many gifts carry symbolic meanings, it is always best to seek the advice of a cultural informant before selecting gifts. The giving of large gifts, or payments for special service, should only be undertaken after consulting the legal department in the home and host culture.
