Some psychologists maintain that mental acts such as thinking are not performed in the brain alone, but that one's muscles also participate. It may be said that we think with our muscles in somewhat the same way that we listen to music with our bodies.

You surely are not surprised to be told that you usually listen to music not only with your ears but with your whole body. Few people can listen to music that is more or less familiar without moving their body or more specifically, some part of their body. Often when one listens to a symphonic concert on the radio, he is tempted to direct the orchestra even though he knows there is a competent conductor on the job.

Strange as this behavior. may be, there is a very good reason for it. One cannot derive all possible enjoyment from music unless he participates, so to speak, in its performance. The listener "feels" himself into the music with more or less noticeable motions of his body.

The muscles of the body actually participate in the mental process of thinking 'in the same way, but this participation is less obvious because it is less noticeable.

Some psychologists maintain that thinking is ______.

A.not a mental process

B.more of a physical process than a mental action

C.a process that involves our entire bodies

D.a process that involves the muscles as well as the brain

第3题

If you are like most people, your intelligence varies from season to season. You are
probably a lot sharper in the spring than you are at any other time of the year. A well-known scientist, Ellsworth Huntington (1876-1937), concluded from other men's work and his own among people in different climates that climate and temperature have a definite effect on our mental abilities. He found that cool weather is much more favorable for creative thinking than summer heat. This does not mean that all people are less intelligent in the summer than they are during the rest of the year. It does mean, however, that the mental abilities of large numbers of people tend to be lowest in the summer.

Spring appears to be the best period of the year for thinking. One reason may be that in the spring man's mental abilities are affected by the same factors that bring about great changes in all nature. Fall is the next-best season, then winter. As for summer, it seems to be a good time to take a long vacation from thinking!

1). Huntington based his conclusions on ___________.

A. work with people in different climates

B. records of temperature changes

C. records of change in his own intelligence

D. all of the above

2). Ellsworth Huntington decided that climate and temperature have _________.

A. a great effect on everyone's intelligence

B. no effect on people's intelligence

C. effect on only a few people's intelligence

D. some effect on most people's intelligence

3). One possible reason why spring is the best season for thinking is that ___________.

A. there are some things making all nature different from before

B. it is neither too warm nor too cold

C. it is more natural for the development of mental abilities

D. it lasts longer than the other seasons

4). The two best seasons for thinking seem to be _____________.

A. winter and summer

B. fall and winter

C. spring and fall

D. summer and spring

5). According to the passage above, vacations from thinking should be taken ___________.

A. as seldom as possible

B. during spring and fall

C. several times throughout the year

D. during the summer

Some psychologists maintain that mental acts such as thinking are not performed in the

brain alone, but that ones muscles also participate (take part in). It may be said that we think with our muscles in somewhat the same way that we listen to music with our bodies.

You surely are not surprised to be told that you usually listen to music not only with your cars but with your whole body. Few people can listen to music that is more or less familiar without moving their body or, more specifically, some part of their body. How do you know if your office culture is helping, or hurting, your employees, and as a result your bottom line? Designing a thoughtful(周到的)office culture is so important for a new company. Here are some aspects where a leader should be careful not to make mistakes. A cohesive (和谐一致的) office culture starts at the top and is built with intention. Strict dress code or early start time may seem like an easy way to build professionalism (职业化)in your workplace, but is there a good reason for it? Strict requirements that work in a law office may erode the work ethic at a hip tech startup. Make sure to back up your rules with reason. For example, at Culture Studio, a T -shirt design and printing company, you’d better believe there’s no place for ties. Employees are encouraged to dress down in their brand’s merchandise or their competitors’ Leadership shouldn’t abandon culture development there. Good employees tend to be goaloriented over-achievers, so put your budget on that with team -building activities, contests, and incentives for the best. Setting the tone for your workplace starts with each hire and at every level in the company. "High tech" and "state of the art" are two expressions that describe the modem technology.
High tech is just a shorter way of saying high technology. And high technology describes any invention, system of device that uses the newest ideas or discoveries of science and engineering. What is high tech? A computer is high tech. So is a communications satellite. (79) A modem manufacturing (生产) system is surely high tech. High tech became a popular expression in the United States during the early 1980' s. Because of improvements in technology, people could buy many new kinds of products in American stores, such as home computers, microwave ovens, etc.

"State of the art" is something that is as modem as possible. It is a product that is based on the very latest methods and technology. Something that is "state of the art" is the newest possible design or product of a business or industry. A state of the art television set, for example, uses the modernest electronic design and parts. It is the best that one can buy.

"State of the art" is not a new expression. Engineers have used it for years, to describe the best and most modem way of doing something. Millions of Americans began to use the expression in the late 1970 ' s. The reason was the computer revolution. Every computer company claimed that its computers were "state of the art".

Computer technology changed so fast that a state of the art computer today might be old tomorrow. (80) The expression "state of the art" became as common and popular as computers themselves. Now all kinds of products are said to be "state of the art".

What is the purpose of the passage?

A.To tell how "high tech" and "state of the art" have developed.

B.To give examples of "high tech".

C.To tell what "high tech" and "state of the art" are.

D.To describe very modem technology.

To get a chocolate out of a box demands a considerable amount of unpacking: the box has to
be taken out of its paper bag; the plastic wrapper has to be torn off, the lid opened and the packing paper inside removed; the chocolate itself then has to be unwrapped from its own piece of paper. Similarly a pot of face cream comes surrounded by layers of paper, waged inside a cardboard box, and the whole thing wrapped tightly in plastic.

It is not only luxuries which are wrapped in this way, With so many goods now produced centrally and sold in supermarkets it is becoming increasingly difficult to buy anything from nails to potatoes that is not already done up in plastic or paper.

The wrapper itself is of no interest to the shopper, who usually throws it away immediately. Useless wrapping accounts for much o the 31 pounds in weight of rubbish put out by the average London household each week. So why is it done? Some of it, like the wrapping on meat, is necessary, but most of the rest is simply competitive selling. This is stupid. Packaging is using up scarce energy and raw materials and ruining all the time. One big firm reports that its glass, cans and paper have all gone up by 30 per cent in the last couple of months, while plastic has increased by 50 percent and all these prices are still rising. This seems as yet to have had surprisingly little effect on the packaging practice of manufacturers.

Little research is being carried out on the costs in energy and materials of other possible types of packaging. Just how practical is it, for instance, for local authorities to save waste paper and re-manufacture it as egg-boxes? Would it be cheaper to plant another forest to produce new paper?

One reason for the unorganized behavior. of everyone concerned is probably the varied nature of the packaging industry. So many people, with so many different interests of their own, are affected that it is extremely hard to reach any agreement on what should be done. Also, packagers say that preserving forests and preventing waste is not their concerns.

The shopper gets rid of the wrapper immediately because______.

A.he is careless.

B.it adds to the weight.

C.it is difficult for him to handle.

D.it has no importance for him.
