While I was waiting to enter university, I saw in a newspaper a teaching job wanted at

a school about ten miles from where I lived. Being very short of money and wanting to do something useful, I applied, fearing as I did so, that without a degree and with no __1__ of teaching my chances of getting the job were slight.

However, three days later, a letter arrived, calling me to Croydon for a meeting with the headmaster. It was clearly the headmaster himself __2__ open the door. He was short and round.

"The school," he said, "is made up of one class of twenty-four boys between seven and thirteen." I should have to teach all the subjects except art, which he taught himself. I should have to divide the class into three groups and teach them in turn at three different __3__. And I was disappointed at the thought of teaching maths, a subject at which I wasn't very good at school. Worse perhaps was the idea of __4__ to teach them on Saturday afternoon because most of my friends would be enjoying themselves at that time.

Before I had time to ask about my salary, he got up to his __5__. "Now," he said, "you'd better meet my wife. She is the one who really runs this school."

I can clearly remember the first time I met Mr. Andrews, my old headmaster, (21) that was over twenty years ago . During the war ,I was at school in the north of England . We had been to all the schools near where we lived ,but the more (24) my father argued ,the more it became. In the end ,we went to a school about five miles away from home. The headmaster kept us waiting for (25) an hour. I could hear the boys playing in the playground outside when the headmaster’s secretary finally (27) us into his office. Mr. Andrews spoke to me first ,“Why do you want to come here ?” he asked. I had been thinking of saying something about studying but couldn’t (28) remembering the boys outside .“I don’t know anyone in London, ” I said . “I like to play with the other boys. Mr. Phanourakis was 80 years old when he left his Greek mountain village and took. a forei
gn ship for America. His sons had done well in the restaurant business there and wanted him to spend his remaining years with them.

Mr. Phanourakis knew no language except his own but, with the self-confidence of a mountain villager, he made his way easily about the ship. When the bell announced the serving of lunch on his first day on board he found the number of his table from the list outside the dining-room and went straight to his table while many of the other passengers crowded helplessly round the chief steward waiting to be told where their tables were.

It was a small table for two. Mr. Phanourakis sat down. After a few minutes his table--companion arrived. "Bon appetit, m’sieur," he murmured politely, as he took the other chair.

Mr. Phanourakis looked at him quickly and then smiled. "Phanourakis," he said, carefully spacing out the Greek syllables.

During the afternoon, one of the ship's officers, who spoke a little Greek, asked Mr. Phanourakis whether he had found any acquaintances on board.

The old man shook his head. "The only person I've met is my table-companion," he said. "I think he's French. His name is Bonappetit."

"That is not a name," said the officer gently. "It is a French expression that means 'good appetite'."

The old man's sons wanted him to go to America ______.

A.to live the rest of his life with them

B.and stay with them for a few years

C.to help them run their restaurant

D.to see how rich they had become

第6题

Does a bee know what is going on in its mind when it navigates its way to distant food sou
rces and back to the hive (蜂房), using polarized sunlight and the tiny magnet it carries as a navigational aid? Or is the bee just a machine, unable to do its mathematics and dance its language in any other way? To use Donald GrifTm's term, does a bee have awareness, or to use a phrase I like better, can a bee think and imagine?

There is an experiment for this, or at least an observation, make long ago by Karl Von Frisch and more recently confirmed by James Gould at Princeton, Biologists who wish to study such things as bee navigation, language, and behavior. in general have to train their bees to fly from the hive to one or another special place. To do this, they begin by placing a source of sugar very close to the hive so that the bees (considered by their trainers to be very dumb beasts) can learn what the game is about. Then, at regular intervals, the dish or whatever is moved progressively father and farther from the hive in increments (增长) of about 25 percent at each move. Eventually, the target is being moved 100 feet or more at a jump, very far from the hive. Sooner or later, while this process is going on, the biologists shifting the dish of sugar will find the bees are out there waiting for them, precisely where the next position had been planned. This is an uncomfortable observation to make.

With what subject is the passage mainly concerned?

A.The bee, a social animal.

B.Navigational techniques of bees.

C.Testing the awareness of bees.

D.The bee hive, nature's candy shop.
