Every year for more than a decade I"ve gone with some good male friends to the music festi- val. Women are not invited， but they do prepare a picnic for our trip. The better the food， the more likely we are to continue our annual tradition and give them peace at least one week out of the year.

When we"re not eating， we sit around in circles and talk about manly stuff: women， mostly.After years of this special journey I have figured out women are different from us， especially when it comes to how we communicate. Women don"t need to manufacture reasons to chat， but guys need excuses like outings or organized events.

And I"ve noticed that when women are in groups there can be several conversations going on at once. When men are in a group， one man talks， and everybody else listens. It"s like bluegrass jamming in a way; one musician plays the lead， and the rest try to follow.

I"ve had more heartfelt conversations with other men at the festival than I"ve had at any other time in my life， partly because there are no women there， and partly because we"re all a little drunk. It was males bonding over whatever parts we still had left. The festival is also the only place I"ve ever cried in front of other men.

As the years have slipped by， some in our group have lost parents and grandparents， some have divorced， and others have changed careers， not always on purpose. It seems that every year something distressing has happened to at least one member of our crew， and the rest of us are there to listen and offer support.

I hope that this column can offer some comfort to women: if your man heads out on a bowling or poker night with the guys， be happy. Chances are good he"s not fleeing you and the kids， but he"s running toward the conversations he can only have with other men， and he"ll come home the better for it.

Some people have even tried to find their perfect match through game shows on television. At one point during the series, one contestant volunteered to leave because she said she didn’t find him attractive. After two dates she said she had had enough, and she couldn’t see it working. “He wasn’t my cup of tea.” In another episode the woman he was on a date with burst into tears when he called her by another contestant’s name. “You called me by another girl’s name. I can’t believe you did that. I really liked you,” she sobbed. 4 Susan Grant is in something of a dilemma. She has been invited to join the board of the

troubled Marlow Fashion

Group as a non-executive director, but is uncertain as to the level and nature of her contribution to the strategic

thinking of the Group.

The Marlow Fashion Group had been set up by a husband and wife team in the 1970s in an economically depressed

part of the UK. They produced a comprehensive range of women’s clothing built round the theme of traditional English

created a strong family atmosphere in its network of partners and were reluctant to change this.

Unfortunately, changes in the market for women’s wear presented a major threat to Marlow Fashion. Firstly, women

had become a much more active part of the workforce and demanded smarter, more functional outfits to wear at work.

Marlow Fashion’s emphasis on soft, feminine styles became increasingly dated. Secondly, the tight control exercised

by Betty and Rodney Marlow and their commitment to control of design, manufacturing and retailing left them

vulnerable to competitors who focused on just one of these core activities. Thirdly, there was a reluctance by the

Marlows and their management team to acknowledge that a significant fall in sales and profits were as a result of a

fundamental shift in demand for women’s clothing. Finally, the share price of the company fell dramatically. Betty and

Rodney Marlow retained a significant minority ownership stake, but the company had had a new Chief Executive

Officer every year since 2000.

Women earn less than men do. For example, in 1998 the hourly wages of women in the U. S. w

ere 26% less than those of men. The gap between male and female incomes becomes wider with age. The gap between the labor incomes of young women and young men varies. It's also clear that jobs in which women are concentrated pay less. The larger the number of workers who are women in an industry, the lower the average wages.

Why do women earn less than men do？ Are the differences explained by the fact that women are looked down upon？ If so, the government has to intervene (干预), to force the employers to pay equal wages to equal jobs. However, there is no agreement among economists about the causes of the gap. One view argues that women on the average have chosen low-paid jobs in which workers enjoy the freedom of entering and leaving the labor force, which reduces their years of experience relative to men.
