Everyone seems to be in favor of progress. But " progress" is a funny word. It doesn't nec

essarily mean that something has become stronger, wiser, or better. It simply means changing it from being one thing to another and sometimes it turns out to be worse than before.

Consider medicine, for instance. No one can deny that medical progress has enriched our lives tremendously. Because of medical advances, we eat better, live easier and are able to take care of ourselves more efficiently. We can cure disease with no more than one injection or a pill. If we have a serious accident, surgeons can put us back together again. If we are born with something defective, they can repair it. They can make us happy, restore our normality, ease our pain, replace worn parts and give us children. They can even bring us back from the dead. These are wonderful achievements, but there is a price we have to pay.

Because medicine has reduced infant mortality and natural death so significantly, the population has been rising steadily, in spite of serious efforts to reduce the rate of population growth. Less than a century ago in the United Stales, infant mortality claimed more than half of the newborn within the first year of life. Medical advances, however, have now reduced that rate to nearly zero. A child born in the United States today has better than a 90% chance of survival. Furthermore, medical advances have ensured that most of these infants will live to be seventy years of age or more, and even that life expectancy increases every year. The result of this progress is an enormous population increase that threatens the quality of life, brought about by progress in the medical profession.

According to this passage, " progress" doesn't always mean that______.

A.something has become stronger and better

B.something has been changed from being one thing to another

C.something has become funny

D.something turns out to be worse than before

根据以下材料回答第 36~40 题: Passage TwoDuring the Christmas shopping rush in London

根据以下材料回答第 36~40 题:

Passage TwoDuring the Christmas shopping rush in London, the interesting story was reported of a tramp (流浪者)who, apparently though no fault of his own, found himself locked in a well-known chain store late on Christmas Eve. No doubt the store was crowded with last-minute Christmas shoppers and the staff were dead beat and longing to get home. Probably all the proper security checks were made before the store was locked and they left to enjoy the three-day holiday untroubled by customers desperate to get last-minute Christmas presents.

However ridiculous that may be, our tramp found himself alone in the store and decided to make the best of it .There was food , drink ,bedding and camping equipment, of which he made good use. There must also have been television sets and radios. Though it was not reported if he took advantage of these facilities, when the shop reopened he was discovered in bed with a large number of empty bottles beside him. He seems to have been a man of good humor as indeed tramps very commonly are.

Everyone else was enjoying Christmas, so he saw no good reason why he should not do the same. He yielded himself cheerfully, and was taken by the police. Perhaps he had had a better Christmas than usual . He was sent to prison for seven days. The judge awarded no compensation (赔偿)to the chain store for the food and drink our tramp had consumed. They had , in his opinion, already received valuable free publicity from the story revealed in the newspaper and one television. Perhaps the judge had had a good Christmas, too.

第 36 题 The tramp was locked in the store_________.

A.for 7 days

Passage Five

Probably the hardest part of setting goals is the first step of actually deciding to take action! The first barrier facing most people is the incorrect assumption that goals are only for business people. The reality is everyone sets goals mentally throughout the day. There are always occasions where something has to be done at a particular time Or in a particular place.Simple examples could be getting up at a certain time in order to be at work,or to meet with a friend for a leisure activity.

The beauty of having goals is the uniqueness.of each one to’the goal setter.

Whether it is personal, financial, business or spiritual, they are all specific to that person and their circumstances.

The most important part initially is to write them down.Having goals mritten down gives you incredible power while helping you to focus on this area.

Aim for something that will stretch you while remaining achievable. If you achieve your goal too easily,it is not high enough to make any significant change in your life and needs to be adjusted. On the other hand,if you consistently miss the goals,re-evaluate,and consider setting them a little lower as you will only get discouraged and probably give up. The aim is to keep growing, and moving into a more satisfactory position for your particular circumstances.

As you obtain the levels that you have set for yourself, always include a small reward at each point. This might only be a small thing in the early days like a meal out or a weekend vacation.

Remember that these changes will not happen overnight and there will be a period of time when nothing seems to be happening. This is why the goals need to be detailed and as specific as possible with a consequence and benefit.

Allow some time on a daily basis to educate yourself on how to make the necessary adjustments in your life. This could include listening to a CD,or reading a book on motivation etc.

A simple method to start with could be one goal in the main areas of life to be achieved in one month, six months, twelve months or five years.Break that down further into a daily, weekly and monthly system.Stay focused and disciplined t0 achieve all that you desire.

Direction:There are five passages in this part,Each passage is followed by five questions
or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choice marked A,B,C and D. Choose the best one and mark the corresponding letter with a single bar across the square brackets on your machine-scoring ANSWER SHEET.

Passage One

They may be one of Britain’s most successful exports and among the world’s most popular TV shows, ranking alongside the World Cup Final and the Olympics Games opening ceremony in terms of audience. But,in Britain, beauty competitions are unfashionable. To most people, beauty contests seems as out-dated as bowing. Nicolas Baker,a lawyer in London, said that“As much as I think it’s fine for women to do it,I don’t think it’s interesting and in fact,I think they’re irrelevant to today.”Last year,Miss World was broadcast to 142 countries, but it wasn’t even shown in the country where it started in 1951.

It wasn’t always this way in Britain. Once beauty queens dated footballers, traveled the world and were guaranteed fame, fortune and fun. Now,they open new supermarkets, are sponsored by dry-cleaning companies and if they’re lucky, they get free clothes from supermarkets.

When Francesca Marchant was crowned Miss Sussex in 1969,it was something to be extremely proud of“I came from a small town, and all my friends were green with envy when they found out I’d won. My boyfriend at the time thought it was terrific and boasted to everyone that he was going out with a beauty queen.

But the good times couldn’t last. The feminist movement gathered momentum. Some women were determined to bring an end to these“cattle shows.” Nowadays, saying that you were a beauty queen just doesn’t sound good.

Miss World organizers claim that contestants are judged on qualities other than just their physical appearance. But Jacqueline Gold,England’s representative at this year’s contest, was not chosen because of her academic record. The Miss World Website states that she“left school having gained many computer qualifications, and certificates in First Aid and Lift Saving.”meaning, not much of an education.

The only time contests attract attention now is because of the protesters. At the 1999 Miss World in Britain around 60 demonstrators hurled flour bombs and fought with the police. They denounced the beauty contest as a“sexist cattle market”. They waved banners saying“fat girls are cool”and“women’s bodies are not for sale.”

31. Beauty contests in Britain are now .

A. bringing huge benefits for the country

B. as popular as the World Cup Final

C. no longer popular in the country

D. widely protested in the country
