Does money buy happiness? It's sometimes said that scientists have found no relationship b
etween money and happiness, but that's myth, says University of Illinois psychologist Ed Diener.

The connection is complex. In fact, very rich people rate substantially higher in satisfaction with life than very poor people do, even within wealthy nations, he says. "There is overwhelming evidence that money buys happiness," said economist Andrew Oswald of University of Warwick in England. The main debate, he said, is how strong the effect is.

Oswald recently reported a study of Britons who won between $ 2,000 and $ 250,000 in a lottery (彩票拍奖). As a group, they showed a boost in happiness averaging a bit more than one point on a 36-point scale when surveyed two years after their win, compared to their levels two years before they won.

Daniel Kahnman, a Nobel-Prize winner and Princeton economist, and colleagues, recently declared that the notion that making a lot of money will produce good overall mood is "mostly illusory". They noted that in one study, members of the high-income group were almost twice as likely to call themselves "very happy" as people from households with incomes below $ 20,000. But other studies, rather than asking for a summary estimate of happiness, follow people through the day and repeatedly record their feeling. These studies show less effect of income on happiness. Kahneman and colleagues said.

There is still another twist to the money-happiness story. Even though people who make$150,000 are considerably happier than those who make $ 40,000, It's not clear why, says psychologist Richard E. Lucas of Michigan State University.

Researchers conclude that any effect of money on happiness is smaller than most daydreamers assume. "People exaggerate how much happiness is bought by an extra few thousand," Oswald said. "The quality of relationships has a far bigger effect than quite large rises in salary. It's much better advice, if you're looking for happiness in life, try to find the right husband or wife than to try to double your salary."

The main purpose of this passage is to discuss ______

A.the contributions of household incomes to happiness

B.the complex relationship between money and happiness

C.the positive relationship between money and happiness

D.the negative relations of money to happiness

第8题

Before Moko the dolphin turned up,the beached whales were in clear distress. But when Moko
arrived at Mahia beach on the east coast of New Zealand?S North Island, their mood changed and they followed him to safety. The ability of some animals to communicate is well known. What?s less well documented, however,is the communication between species.Justin Gregg, vice president of the Dolphin Communication Project, said it is possible that a dolphin and a whale could communicate in some way.“But it wouldn?t be instructions like ?Hey,buddy, the open ocean is over here.Follow me, ?"he says. Dolphins use three forms of signaling to other dolphins—whistles, clicking and postures.A whale might have signals in common with a dolphin, just as different species of dolphins are known to share signals which might theoretically allow a form of basic inter species communication. But just as it?s possible that Moko the dolphin and the stranded whales shared a signal,it is also possible that the whales just saw a vaguely similar creature and followed it. There are many reasons why different species communicate, says Vincent Janik, lecturer at the Sea Mammal Research Unit at St Andrew?s University.“The animals exploit the systems of others for their own benefits.Sometimes the benefits are the same for each, therefore they share information.Sometimes they are trying to take advantage of the other.Getting food may not be to the advantage of the one giving up the food” What happened after Moko the dolphin appeared at Mahia beach?

A.The beached whales still felt distressful

B.Moko 1ed the whales back to the sea

C.The whales were still stuck on the beach

D.Moko and the whales swam together ashore

第10题

Watercolor is the oldest painting medium known. It dates back to the early cave dwellers '
who discovered they could add lifelike qualities to drawings of animals and other figures on the walls of caves by mixing the natural colors found in the earth with water.

Fresco, one of the greatest of all art forms, is done with watercolor. It is created by mixing pigments and water and applying these to wet plaster. Of the thousands of people who stand under Michelangelo's heroic ceiling in the Sistine Chapel, very few are aware that they are looking at perhaps the greatest watercolor painting in the world.

The invention of oil painting by the Flemish masters in the fifteenth century led to a decline in fresco painting, and for the next several centuries watercolor was used mainly as a medium for doing preliminary sketches or as a tool for study. It was not until the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries that English painters reinstated watercolor as a serious art form. The English have a notorious love for the outdoors and also great fondness for small, intimate pictures. The subdued tones of watercolor had a remarkably strong appeal for them.

The popularity of watercolor continued to grow until in the twentieth century the United States passed England as the center for watercolor, producing such well - known watercolor artists as Thomas Eakins and Andrew Wyeth.

What is the main theme of the passage?

A.The decline of fresco painting.

B.The predominance of oils over watercolor.

C.The rediscovery of watercolor in England.

D.The origin and development of watercolor.
