I was born into a middle-class family in Beijing.Being the eldest of three children, I

acquired the ability to “lead” my younger brother and sister. And so, ever since childhood, I have been something of a leader, taking a guiding position in most groups and activities I‘ve been involved in.This genuine gift is one of the most important reason for why I am qualified to pursue a career in management.

I have always had a very pleasant personality. Most people perceive me to be easy-going.I like to express my opinions when I am certain and have never been afraid to do so since I entered college. When I was a kid, I was afraid to go on stage to speak in the public. After persistent self-training, the stage-fright(怯场), finally went away.I was chosen as the delegate of Fudan University to participate in the National Intercollegiate debate contest and won the championship.Another strong point of mine is that I am constantly pushing myself to be the best.I have a broad common sense and even broader interests.I like to read and learn new things, and I rarely get satisfied easily. The area that I need to improve the most is in thinking more freely.

I am also satisfied with myself in my performance during my four years of college.Under the enormous pressure of being an Engineering student, I was able to maintain decent grades while keeping myself busy with a lot of extra-curricular activities. As mentioned in the application form, I was chosen among several hundred applicants to be one of the delegation members of a good will mission to visit the United States in 1988.I worked for the China Youth Travel Agency during the summers to guide tourists from various countries to China’s tourist attractions.Through these, I acquired experience in working with others and, more importantly, became more mature.

I am also satisfied with my adaptability to new environments.I was enrolled in the University of Michigan in September 1991.The sudden change of living, studying and even communicating in a very different place did not give me too much trouble.I finished my Master’s degree in one year with satisfactory grades.

I believe I am intelligent and learn quickly.I started working for IBM in March 1993. Initially, I was assigned to work on a couple of projects that I was not extremely familiar with. This, coupled with the fact that I lacked formal work experience, caused me to have a hard time in the beginning. However, I displayed my sharpness in learning the basics, and brought to the work my usual dedication.By the time I had been there for six weeks, I was ready for even greater challenges. In December 1993, I was promoted to be the Principal Investigator of the project that I am currently working on.

And he was kind to me; I will always be grateful that in his absolute warmth and generosity he fulfilled my deepest dream of what a poet should be. "

"To me he is not dead at all. Hardly a day goes by that I don't think of him or speak of him. Once, just before he died, when he was sick with the flu, I took him a sack full of oranges. The joy I felt in giving that simple gift is never decreased by time. He said he like oranges, too."

It seems that beauty and women are twins. Observe for yourself. Ads on fashion flood TV sc
reen, radio programs, magazines and the streets. Whether they have realized or not, women are besieged (包围) by a sea of fashion. They are taught to think that without beautiful clothes they will grow old and lose their charm. So who dares to neglect dressing up at the cost of their appearance and youth?

But I do not agree with the opinion that women have to show their beauty through their looks. The richness of their mind proves to be more beautiful and attractive than their looks. A woman who has experienced many troubles and may be called "aunt" or "granny" can still maintain her beauty if she has such excellent qualities as knowledge, ability, a kind heart and concern for others.

In addition, old and young, beautiful and ugly are relative concepts. People who keep a young mind will never feel old. Curious about new things and eager to learn more, they keep up with the tide. Plainly dressed women may have a type of beauty, which is pure and real.

Reading and learning is the best way to keep one youthful. Good books are fertile soil which can feed the flower of one's heart and looks.

Why does the author say that beauty and women are twins?

A.Women are born to be beauties.

B.Women like to show off their beauties

C.Women are proud of their beauty

D.Women try to maintain their beauty by dressing up

GrandmaMosesisamongthemostfamoustwentieth-centurypaintersoftheUnitedStates,yetshehadonlyju

Grandma Moses is among the most famous twentieth-century painters of the United States, yet she had only just begun painting in her late seventies. As

she once said of herself: “I would never sit back in a rocking-chair, waiting for someone to help me.”

She was born on a farm in New York State. At twelve she left home and was in a service until

at twentyseven, she married Thomas Moses, the tenant of hers. They farmed most of their lives.

She had ten children, of whom five survived; her husband died in 1928.

Grandma Moses painted a little as a child and made embroidery pictures as a hobby, but only

changed to oils in old age because her hands had become too stiff to sew and she wanted to keep

busy and pass the time. Her pictures were first sold at an exhibition, and were soon noticed by a

businessman who bought everything she painted. Three of the pictures were shown in the Museum

of Modern Art, and in 1940 she had her first exhibition in New York. Between the 1930‘s and her death

she produced some 2,000 pictures: careful and lively pictures of the country life she had known, with a wonderful sense

of color and form.

Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A. Grandma Moses

B. The Children of Grandma Moses

C. Grandma Moses: Her Best Pictures

D. Grandma Moses and Her First Exhibition

We are living in one of those periods in human history which are marked by revolutionary c
hanges in all of man's ideas and values. It is a time when every one of us must look within himself to find what ideas, what beliefs, and what ideals each of us will live by. And unless we find these ideals, and unless we stand by them firmly, we have no power to overcome the crisis in which we in our world find ourselves.

I believe in people, in sheer, unadulterated humanity. I believe in listening to what people have to say, in helping them to achieve the things which they want and the things which they need. Naturally, there are people who behave like beasts, who kill, who cheat, who lie and who destroy. But without a belief in man and a faith in his possibilities for the future, there can be no hope for the future, but only bitterness that the past has gone. I believe we must, each of us, make a philosophy by which we can live. There are people who make a philosophy out of believing in nothing. They say there is no truth, that goodness is simply cleverness in disguising your own selfishness. They say that life is simply the short gap in between an unpleasant birth and an inevitable death. There are others who say that man is born into evil and sinfulness and that life is a process of purification through suffering and that death is the reward for having suffered.

I believe these philosophies are false. The most important thing in life is the way it is lived, and there is no such thing as an abstract happiness, an abstract goodness or morality, or an abstract anything, except in terms of the person who believes and who acts. There is only the single human being who lives and who, through every moment of his own personal living experience, is being happy or unhappy, noble or base, wise or unwise, or simply existing.

The question is: How can these individual moments of human experience be filled with the richness of a philosophy which can sustain the individual in his own life? Unless we give part of ourselves away, unless we can live with other people and understand them and help them, we are missing the most essential part of our own human lives.

There are as many roads to the attainment of wisdom and goodness as there are people who undertake to walk them. There are as many solid truths on which we can stand as there are people who can search them out and who will stand on them. There are as many ideas and ideals as there are men of good will who will hold them in their minds and act them in their lives.

A. listening to people's opinions

B. revolutionary changes

C. being happy or unhappy

D. the way it is lived

E. we give part of ourselves away

F. many roads to the attainment of wisdom

When I told my family that I was thinking of takin...

When I told my family that I was thinking of taking a cooking job, the roars of laughter were rather discouraging. No one believed that I could cook at all, as I had never had achance to practise at home, Our cook had ruled in the kitchen for thirty years and had an annoying tendency to regard the saucepans, stove and all the kitchen fittings as her own property. I once crept down there when I thought she was asleep in her room to try out an omelette (妙蛋). Noiselessly I removed a frying pan from its hook and the eggs from their cupboard. It was the pop of the gas that woke her, I think, for I was just breaking the first egg when a pair of slippered feet moved round the door and a shout of horror caused me to break the egg on the floor. This disaster, together with the fact that I was using her one very special beloved and cared for frying-pan, upset her so much that she locked herself in the store room with all the food and we had to make our Sunday dinner of bananas. If the family weren&39;t going to be helpful I would look for a job all by myself and not tell them about it until I&39;d got one. I had seen an agency in a local paper, so as soon as there was no one about to say "Where are you going?" I rushed out of the house in search of it. I sat on the edge of a chair and could see my nose shining out of the corner of my eye.I thought perhaps it was a good thing; it might look more earnest. The woman at the desk examined me through her glasses. Having asked me a few questions, she told me that it would be difficult to get a job without experience. "But," she said, "I&39; ve got someone who needs a cook badly. " She wrote down a number, and my spirits went up as I took the slip of paper she held out to me, saying:“Ring up this lady. She wants a cook. You wouldhave to start tomorrow by cooking dinner for ten people. Could you manage that?" “Oh yes," said I, never having cooked for more than four in my life.
