听力原文:M: You should have seen the line at the housing office. It took me an hour to mak
e my dormitory deposit for next year. Have you made yours yet?

W: No, I'm not sure I'm going to.

M: There's not much time left. The deadline's May 1. That is just two weeks from now. Are you short of cash.

W: No, I'm Okay.

M: You'd better hurry up if you want a dorm room next September. There aren't enough rooms for every one, and first-year students have priority.

W: Well, I've been thinking about living off campus.

M: Have you any idea how much that would cost? There is the rent, utilities, and you'd probably need a car.

W: I know it would be more expensive. I think I can handle it though. The dorm is just so noisy that I can't get anything done. Maybe my grades would be better if I had some peace and quiet in a place of my own.

M: You should study in the library the way I do. Think of the money you'd save.

W: I've got to think it over some more. There's still two weeks left in April.

(23)

A.When to move.

B.Where to live the following year.

C.How much time to spend at home.

第10题

For years, decades in fact, I've puzzled over the response most people have when I
tell them I mostly travel alone.

"You're so brave!"

Why is it that a woman travelling alone, as I have often done for months at a time, is perceived to be "brave", whereas men who travel alone are entirely unremarkable?

You are only brave when you are afraid of something but still do it anyway.I have never been afraid of travelling alone.

The first time I travelled alone was when I was19.I was due to travel in Europe with a friend at the end of the summer. She announced by letter two days before our departure that she would be leaving me halfway at Vienna. It was too late by then to rope in another friend, so it was either to go home after Vienna, or keep going by myself.I kept going.I got on trains by myself, checked into hostels by myself and found my way around by myself. It was weird at first, but later I stopped worrying about it.

When I got back to Ireland after that trip, I felt proud of myself.I had done something I had assumed would be hard, and it had turned out to be not hard at all.

That was three decades ago, and since then I have travelled all over the world, usually on my own.I still do what I did then, which is to keep a diary. The greatest gift of solo travel has been those I've met along the way.I may have set off alone each time but I've encountered many people who became important to me.I met my husband in Kathmandu, Nepal.I met lifelong friends in Australia, Poland, Hungary, Turkey, India, Indonesia and many other places.

阅读下列短文,然后根据短文的内容从 51~54 小题的四个选择项中选出最佳的一项。

There was a river with a small town on either side of it. The towns were linked by a bridge.

One day,a hole appeared in the bridge. Both towns agreed that the hole should be mended. However, disagreement came up as to who should mend it. Each town thought that it had a better reason for the other to mend the hole. The town on the right bank said that it was at the end of the road,so the left-bank town should mend the hole. The town on the left bank,on the other hand, insisted that all the traffic came to the right-bank town,so it was in their interest to mend the bridge.

The quarrel went on and on,and so did the hole. The more it went on,the more the hostility between the two towns grew.

One day a man fell into the hole and broke his leg. People from both towns questioned him closely about whether he was walking from the right bank to the left or from the left bank to the right,in order to decide which town should be blamed for the accident. But he could not remember, since he got drunk that night.

Some time later,a car was crossing the bridge and broke an axle(轴)because of the hole. Neither town paid any attention to the accident,as the traveler was not going from one to the other, but was merely passing through. The angry traveler got out of the car and asked why the hole was not mended.

On hearing the reason,he declared,“I'll buy this hole. Who‘s the owner?”

Both towns at once declared that they owned the hole.

“One or the other, whoever owns the hole must prove it.”

“How shall we prove it?”asked both sides.

“That's simple. Only the owner of the hole has the right to mend it. I‘ll buy the hole from whoever mends the bridge.”

People from both towns rushed to do the job while the traveler smoked a cigar and his driver changed the axle. They mended the bridge in no time and asked for the money for the hole.

“What hole?”The traveler looked surprised.“I can't see any hole. I‘ve been looking for a hole for several years now. I'm prepared to pay a good price for it,but there’s no hole here. Are you pulling my leg or what?”

He got into his car and drove off.
