experimenting on mice. They are studying the relationship between diet and health. At this time, over one hundred experiments are being done in this laboratory.
In one of these experiments, the scientists are studying the relationship between the amount of food the mice eat and their health. The mice are in three groups. All three groups are receiving the same healthy diet. But the amount of food that each group is receiving is different. The first group is eating one cup of food each day, the second group is eating two cups, and the third group of mice is eating three cups.
After three years, the healthiest group is the one that is only eating one cup of food each day. The mice in this group are thinner than normal mice. But they are more active. Most of the day, they are running, playing with one another, and using the equipment in their cages. Also, they are living longer. Mice usually live for two years. Most of the mice in this group are still alive after three years.
The second group of mice is normal weight. They are healthy, too. They are active, but not as active as the thinner mice. But they are only living about two years, not the three years or more of the thinner mice.
The last group of mice is receiving more food than the other two groups. Most of the day, these mice are eating or sleeping. They are not very active. These mice are living longer than the scientists thought - about a year and a half. But they aren't as healthy. They're sick more often than the other two groups.

Feedback from your customers is very important. The more information you have from them, the more competitive you will be in your field. The following techniques will help you know what the customers think of your business.
1. Ask your customers directly and cater to their wishes. This is the simplest way to find out what people want from your service or product. When hotel customers are asked what they want for their breakfast and then the hotel staff are asked what they think the customer wants, the answers are quite different.
2. Be a customer yourself and find out what your customers experience when they use your service. This is one of the most obvious but underused ways for getting feedback. For example, you can act as one of the customers in a wheelchair, and see how you’re treated.
3. Use a focus group. Focus groups are representatives of customers whose job is to provide you with information on their needs and preferences.
4. Use questionnaires and surveys. This is one of the most well-established feedback techniques. When well-conducted, they usually work well.
5. Encourage your front-line staff to build strong relationships with customers. Your front-line staff are the most resourceful and reliable, as well as the least costly, of your customer feedback sources. Their communication with the customers will become important information for improving customer care.
You may deliver the best service in the world. But if it is not what people want, you’re wasting your time. Implement one, two, three or all of the above techniques, and your service and product will improve overnight.

WILL E-READERS REPLACE THE CONVENTIONAL PAPER BOOK?
Kindles, Nooks and other e-readers are threatening the future of printed books. But reading itself may get a boost from the devices. For example, a study found that the kids felt better about reading after a course in which they used Amazon Kindles. The research is in the _International Journal of Applied Science and Technology._
For two months, 199 middle-school students in a reading improvement class in Texas had 15 to 25 minutes every day when they were free to read on the Kindle. In general, the students felt the device improved their reading ability. And they tended to enjoy using an e-reader.
They noted the ease of carrying multiple books in one device, and the feeling that reading was suddenly a high-tech 21st-century activity rather than a boring waste of time. And some low-level readers who might otherwise be embarrassed to be seen with a simple book liked keeping their peers in the dark about what title they were reading. In the old days, one had to use a fake book-cover to achieve that level of secrecy.
1. Amazon Kindles is a kind of e-books. {T; F}
2. The research done in the _International Journal of Applied Science and Technology_ has lasted for two years. {T; F}
