Passage 1 Falls are the number one cause of death ...

Passage 1 Falls are the number one cause of death to old people at home. Most old people can live safely at home if they make a few changes. Falls are common as people are getting older. Up to half of home accidents could be prevented by making some very simple changes. Here are a few suggestions. Mark trouble spots with bright tapes. The first and last steps on stairs are usually high-risk accident are- as. Applying bright tapes and using bright light in these areas would make these spots easier to see. Put grab bars(扶手) in the bathroom. A large number of falls occur in the bathroom. This is unfortunate(不幸的) because it's easy to make the area safe from accidents. Putting grab bars in the bathroom gives people something to hang on to. Invest in a personal alarm. A personal alarm can be started if a person falls or otherwise gets in trouble. With the push of a button, the alarm automatically sends a signal, which gets someone to call and see if the person needs help. 题目: 1. By making some very simple changes at home, old people ______.

A、are free from home accidents

B、can improve their health

C、are likely to live longer

D、can live more safely

If you are writing or studying,it makes very much difference where the light comes from. P
eople who use books and pens every day have to be especially careful about the way the light shines on their work.

Every house gets its light either from daylight through the windows—which is the best to use—or from lamps or electricity;but whichever kind of light it is, the way it shines toward our book or work is a matter of great importance to the eyes.

Take a book, sit with your back toward the window, and try to read. Your shadow(影子)falls all over the page and makes it almost as bad for your eyes as if you were in a dark room.

Now turn around and face the window. The page is in the shadow again, while the bright light is in your eyes.

Try sitting with your right side toward the window. This is very well for reading, but if you were writing, the shadow of your hand would fall across the page and bother(打撹)you a little.

There is just one other way:sit with your left side to the window. Now everything is perfect for reading and for writing, too.

Whatever kind of light is in the room, the rule about the right to sit is always the same.

Which of the following is true?

A.How the light shines on our work is of much importance

B.The way the light shines on your work makes no difference

C.We needn’t care about where the light comes from

D.People can write or study under a light that comes from any direction

When you sit with your face towards the window,____.A.your shadow falls on your book

B.your book is in a shadow

C.the light is still dark

D.the light is on your page

The best way both for reading and for writing is to_____.A.sit facing the light

B.let the light shine from your back

C.sit with your right side towards the light

D.have the light come ffrom your left

The saying “Clothes Make the Man” dates back some 400 years and it refers to the fact that
when people see a well-dressed person, they assume that person is a professional, capable, and (especially in the old days) rich. Therefore, you had to dress like how you wanted to be perceived, what you wanted to eventually achieve. Fast forward 400 years, lots of folks still think the same way. But does it really make a difference?

I happen to be one of those who do not put faith in the old saying. I suppose I might be in the minority but I am a member of an elite club with the likes of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates in my camp.

Perception is not reality; perception is halfway to discovering reality. Perception is drawn from our own impressions, our own belief systems. Is it powerful and influential? Absolutely! Is it all that it seems? Less often than you think. How many times have you cast an initial judgment only to surprise yourself later and learn how you missed out on a great opportunity, person or idea?

Comment 1

In the present era, many associate the well-dressed with being the most successful. It took folks in the business world a long time to overlook the way Steve Jobs wore jeans on the public stage. I did not know Mr. Jobs, though I wish I had. I have heard it said that he invented the concept of “business casual.” In my mind that is as much a matter of self-confidence as it is a matter of taste in clothing.

Comment 2

You are wrong about Steve Jobs. He certainly did care about how he was perceived and his appearance was very much calculated to achieve his desired effect. From his early formal business clothing down to the aggressive casualness of his eventual black turtle neck and jeans uniform, his clothes and the impact they made were clearly foremost in his mind.

Comment 3

It reminds me of the story about the philosopher who goes to a formal dinner party in jeans. When asked if he felt out of place because of his clothes, he looked around and said he hadn’t noticed.

Which of the following might the writer of the passage agree with?

A.Steve Jobs and Bill Gates dress formally.

B.We should not judge a person by his clothing.

C.It is clothes that make the man.

D.The well-dressed are most likely to succeed.

According to the writer of the passage, perception ______.A.might prove wrong

B.is powerful and reliable

C.is half reality

D.might be worthless to us

Speaking of Steve Jobs, the writer of Comment 2 ________.A.points out that Steve Jobs was a very aggressive person

B.suggests that he and Steve Jobs used to be in the same club

C.holds the same view as the writer of the passage

D.thinks Steve Jobs’ casualness was carefully thought out

When he went to the dinner party in jeans (Comment 3), the philosopher _______A.thought that people liked his clothes

B.was not aware of how his clothes looked

C.felt quite embarrassed

D.considered himself out of place

The writer of Comment 1 seems to ______.A.dislike the way Steve Jobs dressed for business occasions

B.suggest that business people have no taste in clothing

C.believe that the well-dressed are the most successful

D.think that Steve Jobs’ casualness reflected his self-confidence

根据以下内容回答下列各题, One of the greatest problems for those settlers in Nebraska in t
he last quarter of the previous century was fuel. Little of the state was forested when the first settlers arrived and it is probable that by 1880, only about one-third of the originally forested area remained, down to a mere 1 percent of the states 77,000 square miles. With wood and coal out of the question, and with fuel needed year-round for cooking, and during the harsh winter months for heating, some solution had to be foun d. Somewhat improbably, the buffalo provided the answer. Buffalo chips (干粪块) were found to burn evenly, hotly, and cleanly, with little smoke and interestingly, no odor, Soon, collecting them became a way of life for the settlers children who would pick them up on their way to and from school, or take part in competitions designed to counteract their natural reluctance. Even a young man, seeking to impress the girl he wanted to marry, would arrive with a large bag of chips rather than with a box of candy or a bunch of flowers. What is the main topic of this passage?

A.The solution to the Nebraska settlers fuel problem.

B.Life in Nebraska in the late ninteenth century.

C.The imporance of the American buffalo.

D.Deforestation in Nebraska in the late nineteenth century.
